Is Solar Water Heater Cost Effective?

Solar water heaters are also characterized as open loop (also called "direct") or closed loop (also called "indirect"). An open-loop system circulates household (potable) water through the collector. Solar water heater equipment to be installed must be new. Rebates will not be offered retroactively (on equipment already installed). Solar water heaters come in a variety of configurations. Each differs in design, cost, performance, and level of complexity.

Solar water heaters are not only environmentally friendly they can be cost efficient over the life of the unit with the savings made from the conservative use of power. The heated water is stored in a tank akin to the conventional tank we are used to. Solar water heaters can be a great investment because they offer a virtually cost-free and renewable energy source for one of your home’s top energy-users. But because the feasibility and benefits of a solar water heater will vary based on a number of variables, such as where you live, which way your roof is facing, and how many people live in your house, it takes some extra savvy to know what your costs and savings will be. Solar water heater projects have various levels of difficulty depending on what type of project you decide to tackle. Whether you're a beginner or you've been building do-it-yourself projects for a while, you'll be able to find something that is right for your level of expertise.

Cold water is piped to the bottom of the tank; hot water is taken off the top. Whenever there's a call for hot water, water pressure from the home moves hot water from the top of the solar batch heater as cold water is pushed into the bottom. Cold water first passes through the solar collector, which preheats the water. The water then continues on to the conventional backup water heater, providing a reliable source of hot water.

Heat pumps offer an energy-efficient alternative to furnaces and air conditioners in moderate climates. Like your refrigerator, heat pumps use electricity to move heat from a cool space into a warm, making the cool space cooler and the warm space warmer. Heating swimming pools, underfloor heating or energy input for space heating or cooling are more specific examples. Heated water can be moved efficiently through insulated pipes without pumps. The normal house water pressure moves it through the solar system and into your house.

Evacuated tubes are the most efficient solar collector used for water heating. These units perform excellent in any location and the improvement is particularly noticeable in colder climates and on darker days. Evacuated tube systems weigh much less than flat-plate systems but cost significantly more. Individual tubes can be replaced in the event of damage, making long term maintenance potentially less costly.
